Good morning to everyone! Be careful as you take those first few steps off thr porch today! The Wilmington area is waking up to just over 6" of heavy wet snow (as officially measuerd here at the Green Side up! world headquarters). The snow has attached it self to everything, including your trees and shrubs! Please , exercise extreme caution if the urge to brush snow off plants should arise as they are under stress with the extra weight of the snow and can break easily. Mother Nature has her way of dealing with this type of thing and as the temps rise today the snow will melt off on its own. We have a neighbor with several Eastern Red Cedar and Cryptomeria that are beautifly covered with snow but are also have a ton of extra weight on their branches from the snow. Growing up in Illinois this was not an uncommon sight. However, typically the result would be alot of broken branches or even the entire plant perminately bent over. Once the snow has melted you can take a look at the plants and do any pruning if needed at that time.
Everyone be careful out there today in your travels. Dont forget to put on the snow chains and head down to the Schwartz Center today for the Wilmington Garden show! Stop by our booth and we can chat about Organic Lawncare or pavers or snow removal or.............whatever is on your mind!
